About the photograph
A young spotter kneels down and hails the Deltic locomotive in front of him. Class 55 Deltic 55007 'Pinza' stands at York station with the 16.00 King's Cross to Edinburgh, "The Talisman", on 20th April 1976 in evening sunshine. The throb of the twin-Napier engines will have added to the Deltic's majesty before the young boy, presumably doing some evening spotting with suitable provisions in his duffel bag.
The locomotive had worked down to London from Newcastle in the morning (on the 1A15 09.20 Newcastle - King's Cross, "The Tees Tyne Pullman"). Some five weeks later, the locomotive entered Doncaster works for an unclassified repair, needing repairs to both boiler water tanks and the replacement of Power Unit No. 1 after a loss of drive between the engine and the main generator.
Proudly Sad, Happily Obsessed is our salute to everyone who has stood at the end of a platform with a notebook and never once apologised for knowing a Deltic by name. The photograph goes on the back of each garment, above a navy panel carrying those words, with the Memories of Motion badge on the chest.
About this piece
A navy piqué polo shirt with the small Memories of Motion badge, in the style of a British Railways station sign, on the left chest. On the back, Deltic 55007 Pinza at York in 1976, above a navy panel reading Proudly Sad, Happily Obsessed.
The shirt is 100% combed ring-spun cotton piqué at 210 g/m², in a classic fit with a ribbed collar, a three-button placket in the same navy, and a straight hem with side vents. A spare button is sewn inside.
Machine wash cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and tumble dry low or hang to dry. Iron cool and inside out if you need to, never over the print, and do not dry clean. The size guide gives chest and length for every size.
