Night Whistler

Seen on 23rd February 1979, Class 40 40139 sits on the centre road at Stockport station awaiting its next duty at 00.15 am. There are no notes for this photograph, so we can only guess as to what service it worked next. An educated guess may be that it was taking over 4M08, the 02.22 am parcels service to Bolton, 18.45 ex-Cardiff, or even the Shrewsbury to York.

Adjacent to Stockport station was a large Royal Mail sorting office, and the station was busy overnight with mail and parcels traffic. Several Parcels trains called at the station during the night, with trains from Manchester to Cleethorpes, Lincoln and Crewe that linked in with the York to Shrewsbury TPO.

The Class 40s were a regular sight in the Stockport area, several being based at the nearby Longsight Depot. Like many of the class, 40139’s steam heating had been removed, so if the loco was going to be utilised on the TPO, it would have been a cold night for all onboard. For those hardy enthusiasts who regularly used the service to move between Yorkshire and the Midlands on overnight moves, the freezing compartments of the Mk. 1 BCK and SK were seen by many as a rite of passage during the winter months.

What is a Matted Print

The Matted Print is a card-backed print with a cut-out window (mat or mount) that forms a border around the print itself. The mat acts as a protective layer, preventing the print surface from coming into direct contact with the frame's acrylic glazing. This separation is crucial to protect the artwork from potential damage caused by condensation, moisture, or sticking to the glazing over time.

The Matted Print is ready to be put into a frame of your choice. Further details can be found here.

All Matted Prints are sent via Royal Mail 48 Tracked service unless the order exceeds £75.00, in which case they are shipped via DPD courier.

Our Recommendation

Print finishes are always subjective, and everyone has their own personal taste. For Black and White prints, we would always recommend choosing a Fine Art paper. Our personal favourite is the Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm paper. This paper always shows off contrast in Black and White photographs, and reduces glare from indirect light when displayed on a wall at home. If you prefer a "gloss" finish, then the Hahnemühle Fine Art Pearl 285gsm paper is the best choice.
