About the photograph
Local spotters gather round the front-end of a Hymek Class 35 (possibly 7001) at Worcester Shrub Hill's down main platform end in the autumn of 1973. Having arrived from Paddington, the signal would suggest the loco is about to go on-shed. The line to the right is for Kidderminster and Bromsgrove, while continuing to Hereford would require the left signal arms to clear.
The 101-strong Hymek Class 35 diesel-hydraulic fleet was primarily designed to replace steam locomotives on secondary passenger and mixed-traffic freight trains across the Western Region, being delivered between 1961 and 1964. Like other hydraulic transmission locomotives their non-standard transmission proved their undoing, and all had been withdrawn by 1975.
This platform scene was replayed across the country on weekends or during the school holidays. The 1970s may not have been as "glamorous" for trainspotters, but cult followings of locomotive classes were more prevalent, and this was definitely the case with the Diesel Hydraulic locomotives such as the Hymeks.
