We have included a few shots of other Manchester stations simply because they are great photographs. Living near Mauldeth Road station, Ronnie would take time out to photograph trains along the 'Styal Line', many of which were 'running-in' turns or test trains from Crewe. The main areas we have included in this first book are Manchester London Road (as it was known pre-1960), Longsight and Stockport, natural choices for Ronnie, working as he did at the adjacent signal boxes and able to capture superb images, either from the box interior or the line side.

The sheer variety of motive power seen in South Manchester is reflected though Ronnie's photographs. Local trains between Crewe and Manchester would often be running-in turns from Crewe works, so Duchess and Princess Class engines were regularly captured on such services. Ronnie photographed the BR Standard 9Fs on their test runs from Crewe, the engines appearing to be examined at Longsight in between the return trips from Crewe. The early electric locomotives are also seen; some rare shots of E1000 (originally the experimental gas-turbine locomotive 18100) on test from Crewe Works in 1958 are captured along with a photograph of experimental AL3 locomotive E3100 (later 83013) on return from Crewe works with new bogies in 1967.

Step back into the evocative world of 1970s British Rail through the lens of ex-railway,an and enthusiast photographer Peter Collins.

This beautifully produced volume from ellyBelly Publications presents a captivating selection of black and white images capturing the Western Region during a defining era of change. Drawn from a remarkable personal archive of over 1,500 images, Peter’s photographs—most of them unseen for over 50 years—document the everyday realities and industrial grandeur of Britain’s railways before the arrival of standardised corporate branding. From London Paddington to Penzance, Wales to the Midlands, the book reflects the final years of Diesel Hydraulics and the rise of the "standard" classes such as 31s, 47s, and the iconic 50s. What sets this collection apart is its atmosphere: not just trains, but the people and places around them. Spotters on platforms, passengers in waiting rooms, and the subtle signs of a changing Britain add life and depth to the imagery. These are not just railway photographs — they are social documents of an era when train travel still had soul. What makes this experience historically significant is that he witnessed the inexorable decline and rundown of the Leeds trams during the middle three years of their abandonment, which ended at the final closure on 7th November 1959, when he bade farewell to several of his former colleagues.

This book is a comprehensive development of his experiences.
